How We Work

The principles behind
every order we fulfil

01
Direct Relationships

We work directly with Latvian mills — no intermediaries, no import brokers. When you ask us a question about the timber, we know the answer because we've been there ourselves.

02
Consistent Quality

Every batch is graded A or Grade B at the mill, then inspected again before it's loaded. We do not ship timber that we wouldn't put in our own projects.

03
Personal Service

You speak to us directly — not a sales team, not a ticket system. We respond the same day, provide accurate lead times, and deal with any issues ourselves.

Why Latvia

Forest country.
Forest quality.

Latvia is one of the most forested countries in Europe — over 54% of its land area is covered by forest, a proportion that has grown steadily over the past century. Centuries of sustainable forestry practice have shaped an industry that takes quality seriously.

Latvian timber — particularly Aspen and Alder for sauna applications, and the thermally modified range for exterior use — is recognised across Europe for its consistency and grade. We are simply in the right place to get it to you.

Thermally Modified Wood

What is thermally
modified wood?

Thermally modified wood is timber that has been treated without any chemicals at temperatures of 215°C and above. Through this process, the timber becomes brown throughout its entire cross-section and resistant to deformation. Throughout its entire service life, thermally modified wood will not be affected by bacteria or insects.

The thermal modification process takes place in a specialised thermal chamber with precision sensors, controlled by experienced specialists using computerised management. The process takes 15–46 hours, encompassing moisture reduction to 0%, temperature increase, as well as controlled cooling and humidification. Throughout the entire process, only temperature and steam are used — no chemicals, no additives.

When installing thermally modified timber outdoors, it will turn grey within approximately 6 months due to sun and rain exposure. If you wish to maintain the classic brown tone, surface treatment products are available that, when applied, will preserve the natural brown colour. This process should be repeated approximately every five years.

All thermally modified timber supplied by Royal Wood has been tested at Georg-August University Göttingen and has received the highest Durability Class 1 quality rating — the biological durability standard that confirms genuine thermal modification.

Thermo Wood
  • Treated with steam and high temperature above 215°C
  • Natural and chemical-free — resistant to fungi and insects
  • Excellent dimensional stability in any conditions
  • Becomes significantly lighter after thermal modification
  • Does not heat up in the sun
Impregnated Wood
  • Impregnant is a chemical substance providing protection against external factors
  • Penetrates only a few millimetres into the timber from the outside
  • Not resistant to resin bleed, which creates an unaesthetic appearance
  • Chemical treatment is not natural or environmentally neutral
Kiln Dried Timber

What is kiln dried wood?

Kiln dried wood is timber that has been dried in a controlled chamber environment at temperatures of 60°C, with continuous airflow circulated throughout the stack. Through this process, moisture is drawn from the timber evenly and consistently, resulting in a stable, strong board that performs reliably in use.

The drying process takes place in a specialised kiln chamber equipped with precision humidity and temperature sensors, operated by experienced technicians using automated controls. The process typically runs for several days, with airflow and heat carefully managed in stages to prevent surface checking, case hardening, or internal stress. Only heat and moving air are used — no chemicals, no additives.

Not all dried timber is kiln dried to the same standard. Timber described as "dried" may have been air-dried only, or kiln dried to an inconsistent final moisture content. Moisture content at the point of delivery is the key quality indicator.

All kiln dried timber supplied by Royal Wood is dried to a target moisture content of 4–6%, verified at dispatch, ensuring dimensional stability from the point of installation.

Kiln Dried Timber
  • Dried at 60°C with controlled airflow
  • No chemicals used at any stage
  • Consistent moisture content of 4–6% on delivery
  • Lighter weight than green timber, reducing handling and shipping costs
Air Dried Timber
  • Dried passively outdoors over months or years
  • Final moisture content is inconsistent and weather-dependent
  • Higher risk of movement after installation
  • Performance varies significantly by batch and season
